Effective Database Administration with a Central Repository

Many database administrative tasks, such as monitoring, capacity planning, policy enforcement, best practice checking, are essentially the same across all the databases and the servers. Many more tasks are at an aggregate level, requiring data from individual databases across your enterprise. They include various reporting tasks, and investigative tasks that may require you to check all or a subset of your databases or servers across the enterprise.

Having a central repository of your databases and servers is absolutely necessary for you to accomplish these tasks in a professional manner. This presentation discusses what you should have in such a repository, how you may pull data together into the repository and keep it up to date, and what problems and tasks you can effectively manage with such a repository.

Linchi Shea has been working with SQL Server since version 4.21a. He works in the financial services sector in and around New York City. Linchi is passionate about creating robust and automated infrastructures for managing SQL Server in an enterprise environment, and enjoys troubleshooting performance issues. From I-95 south-bound

Travel south on I-95 to exit 7. At the bottom of the exit ramp, continue straight until second traffic light. At that light, turn right onto Atlantic Street. Continue north on Atlantic Street to the intersection of Atlantic and Broad Streets. Turn left onto Broad Street. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Washington Boulevard (the campus is on that corner). Turn left at next traffic light into the University of Connecticut's parking garage. UConn is located directly across the street from the garage.

From Route 15 (Merritt Parkway) south-bound

Travel south on Route 15 to exit 35 (High Ridge Road). At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn right onto High Ridge Road. Travel south on High Ridge Road for approximately 2 miles. High Ridge Road turns into Summer Street, a one-way street. Continue south on Summer Street to the intersection of Hoyt and Summer Streets. Turn right onto Hoyt Street. At first light, turn left onto Washington Boulevard. The University of Connecticut's parking garage is approximately 3 blocks ahead on the right. UConn is located directly across the street from the garage.

From I-95 north-bound

Travel north on I-95 to exit 8. At the bottom of the exit ramp, continue straight and turn left onto Atlantic Street. Continue north on Atlantic Street to the intersection of Atlantic and Broad Streets. Turn left onto Broad Street. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Washington Boulevard (the campus is on that corner). Turn left at next traffic light into The University of Connecticut's parking garage. Travel north on Route 15 to exit 34 (Long Ridge Road). At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn right onto Long Ridge Road. Travel south on Long Ridge Road for approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto Cold Spring Road. Follow Cold Spring Road as it curves to the left and becomes Washington Boulevard. Continue on Washington Boulevard for approximately 1 mile. The University of Connecticut's parking garage will be ahead on the right. UConn is located directly across the street from the garage.

Parking is free. Please park on the second level (follow the signs).
